The city of Toledo is the capital of Castile La Mancha region and it was the capital of the Spanish Crown until 1563. The city is located at 70 km south of Madrid on the N-401 highway. High Speed Trains (AVE) connect Madrid with Toledo (35 minutes).
Toledo city, a UNESCO World Heritage place, is the repository of more than 2000 years of history. It is famous for the coexistence of the Christian, Islamic and Jewish cultures. The city historical center, that retains its medieval design, has more than 100 monuments (ancient mosques, Gothic or Mudejar churches, Romanic or Visigoth constructions, synagogues or Renaissance palaces). Toledo cathedral, built from 1226 to 1493, is ranked among the greatest gothic structures in Europe. The city of Toledo is surrounded by the Tagus River resulting in a landscape of exceptional environmental quality. Tagus River is the longest river on the Iberian Peninsula.
